Destinated to become a commercial
artist, Bertil Schmüll (1946) went to
the School for the Graphic
Profession in Amsterdam.
Inspired by the work of one of his
teachers, the well known ex-libris
artist Maarten de Jong, he started
making wood engravings in his
spare time. And even though De
Jong advised him against an
engraving career, he was willing to
help yong Bertil along.
In 1968 Bertil got a job as an
apprentice-engraver at the firm of
Johan Enschedé & Sons in Haarlem,
the printers of Dutch banknotes,
stamps and other securities.
Enschedé's art-director, the graphic
designer Sem Hartz, sent Bertil to
the National Academy of Visual Arts
where he was instructed byProfessor
Vaarzon Morel.

houtgravures. Ondanks een negatief
advies hielp De Jong de jeugdige

als graveur.
In 1968 kreeg Bertil een baan als
leerling graveur bij de firma Johan
Enschedé en zonen in Haarlem, de
drukkers van bankbiljetten,
postzegels en waardedocumenten.
De grafische ontwerper Sem Hartz
zorgde er voor dat Bertil terecht
kwam op de Kunstacademie,
waar hij les kreeg van professor
Vaarzon Morel.

De werkplek
De kranten
For almost 6 years Bertil - who was married by
then - took on a double workload. His week
included three full working days at Enschedé's,
where he made a.o. stamps for Lebanon and
Luxembourg, and two fulldays and all his
evenings as a student at the Academy.
In 1973 he put up his plate as an independent
artist and soon thereafter moved to the far
north-eastern part of The Netherlands. There he
turned part of the renovated farmhouse where
he setteled down. A place truly quiet and
peaceful, which is so necessary for the patients
and concentration, required to make the copper
engraving this way. For several years he is
making dry point too.
